How We Protect Your Data #

HostGhost performs regular disaster recovery backups of our hosting platform for both shared and reseller hosting services. We aim to maintain approximately 30 sets of recovery backups at all times.

At the server level, HostGhost uses RAID-10 SSD storage arrays on all servers to prevent data loss due to drive failure, while regularly conducting file system checks to ensure file integrity.

Please note that HostGhost does not automatically back up VPS or Dedicated Servers.

Are HostGhost Backups Publicly Accessible? #

The primary purpose of HostGhost backups is to protect against data loss caused by hardware or software failures on our end.

HostGhost customers on higher-tier plans, such as EcoSite Pro or Premium, have direct access to our system backups and can restore data on-demand without our assistance.

Other customers are eligible for one free manual restore per month, with additional restores available for $25 each.

How Do I Request a File Restoration? #

To request a HostGhost backup restore, open a support ticket through the HostGhost Dashboard.

Before submitting a restore request, ensure you have the full path of the files or folders you need restored, the approximate date you’d like the restore to come from, and details of any MySQL databases involved.

Should I Rely on HostGhost Disaster Recovery Backups for My Website’s Backup? #

No, relying solely on HostGhost’s disaster recovery backups is not recommended.

While we take every precaution to protect your data, we strongly encourage you to regularly create backups of your website files and MySQL databases, especially before making significant updates.

Please note that HostGhost does not guarantee the ability to restore your website to a specific date using our disaster recovery backups.

How Do I Create My Own Backups? #

If your hosting account is smaller than 10GB, you can generate a complete cPanel account backup using cPanel’s Backup Wizard tool.

At the website level, in addition to plugins like Updraft, the Softaculous app installer can create both on-demand and scheduled backups.

For more details on creating your backups, refer to our knowledge base articles: How Do I Create a Backup of My Website? and How to Backup WordPress Using Softaculous.

Does HostGhost Allow Storage for Backups I Generate? #

No, HostGhost automatically removes most backups after 48 hours.

As per our Acceptable Use Policy and Terms of Service, HostGhost’s archival policy prohibits the long-term storage of user-generated backups, including WordPress plugin backups, Softaculous backups, and full or partial cPanel backups.

Although we encourage customers to create backups, HostGhost does not allow the long-term storage of backups on our shared or reseller hosting networks.

We recommend downloading generated backups locally or setting up a remote backup storage server via FTP or other protocols.

Full backups generated using the Backup Wizard in your HostGhost cPanel account, or large Softaculous backups, will be automatically purged after 48 hours.
